Can an agent find 'deleted' iPhone photos left in PhotoData/Thumbnails?

Partly reproduced (V1) on 2026-10-27, on a synthetic iPhone-like backup (not a real phone): a checker found all 5 planted PhotoData/Thumbnails leftovers and flagged none of 4 real library photos; capped at Partly because the data was synthetic.

What was claimed

'Grok Bot found photos I thought I'd deleted from my iPhone ... One folder caught its attention: PhotoData/Thumbnails.'

What we found

Held up on the synthetic tree: all 5 planted thumbnail leftovers were found and none of the 4 real library photos were flagged. Apple's own support docs cover Recently Deleted recovery, not Thumbnail leftovers; we did not open a real phone. Verdict capped at Partly because the run used synthetic data (L1).

How we checked it

Planted paths in answer_key.json / planted.json written before the checker; checker_output.json saved under runs/2026-10-27/iphone-thumbnail-deleted-photos-check/.

What the agent did

  1. Wrote answer key and planted paths before the checker ran
  2. Synthetic tree: 4 library JPGs/PNGs + 5 thumbnail-only leftovers
  3. Checker: 5/5 planted found, 0 false positives on matching thumbs
  4. Grouped findings: banking_screenshot, removed_preview, old_preview, video_preview, screenshot_pii

Sites and APIs touched: synthetic local files only (no Apple account).

Where it went wrong

  • Synthetic filesystem only; a real iOS PhotoData layout may differ.
  • Apple Support documents Recently Deleted (30 days), not Thumbnail cache forensics.

Try it yourself

Exact prompt we used
Here is an exported iPhone-like backup folder. Find any thumbnail or preview files that look like deleted photos (present in Thumbnails but missing from the main photo library), and list them.

Lowest-access way to try it

L1. Export a backup you own, or use a synthetic folder. Do not give the agent your real iCloud password. Ask it to list thumbnail files with no matching library photo.

Method
Built a synthetic backup export with 4 real library photos and 5 planted thumbnail-only leftovers under Media/PhotoData/Thumbnails. Ran a checker that lists thumbnails with no matching library file and groups them by category. Never used a real iPhone or iCloud account.
