Is a Christmas Day flight LA to New York really $259 cheaper?

In 24 Google Flights searches LAX to JFK, leaving on Christmas Day was never cheaper than Dec 20-24 for the same return date; the post's two prices were for different trip lengths: the author later confirmed the ~$787 fare was Dec 19 to 27 (8 nights) versus $528 for Dec 25 to 29 (4 nights). Corrected 2026-10-30 after the author's clarification on X.

Score and verdict differ. Google Flights could be searched and read, which lifts the score; the verdict is Failed because the tip itself, fly on Christmas Day to save, did not hold up when the return date was kept the same.

What was claimed

'Google Flights showed me $787 to fly LA → New York nonstop for Christmas week. I had my AI agent run 58 real Google Flights searches. Same JetBlue nonstop, carry-on included: $528. The catch: you fly on Christmas Day.'

@TheEasyLifeAI on X. Original post

What we found

Did not hold up as a tip. For the same return date, leaving on Christmas Day was never cheaper: returning Dec 29 it was $528 vs $497 (Dec 23); Dec 31, $429 vs $418 (Dec 22); Jan 2, $665 vs $665 (Dec 21). The post's two prices were for different trip lengths: JetBlue nonstop Dec 25 to Dec 29 (4 nights) was exactly $528 in our searches, and the post's author later confirmed the ~$787 fare was Dec 19 to Dec 27 (8 nights), a pair outside our grid (our nearest, Dec 19 to Jan 2, was $790, cheapest $788). So the $259 gap compares an 8-night trip with a 4-night trip, not just a different departure day. Note (2026-10-30): corrected after the post's author clarified the dates in a reply on X (https://x.com/TheEasyLifeAI/status/2115624933761970479); we had first guessed the longer trip was Dec 19 to Jan 2 (14 nights). The author also said that with the Dec 29 return fixed, their numbers were $528 vs $611. The verdict stays Failed: with the same Dec 29 return, our grid had Dec 23 at $497, below Christmas Day's $528.

How we checked it

Fares read from the 24 saved Google Flights pages (the same source the post used), Oct 26 08:23-08:25 UTC+8. The post checked Oct 24-25; fares change daily. Not checked by booking.

What the agent did

  1. 24 Google Flights searches: 23 returned fares; 1 empty page, fine on retry
  2. Read every nonstop fare, airline and bag note from each page
  3. Same return date: compared Dec 25 with the cheapest of Dec 20-24
  4. Looked for the post's $787 and $528 JetBlue fares

Where it went wrong

  • The post gives no dates, so we tested a grid of likely dates; its exact pair may differ.
  • We searched JFK only; 'New York' could also mean Newark or LaGuardia.
  • Some cheaper Christmas-week JetBlue fares (e.g. Dec 24 to Dec 31, $430) include no carry-on, so the cheapest fare is not always like for like.
  • 1 of 24 searches came back empty the first time.
