Find work that was never invoiced: jobs vs invoices audit

On synthetic job and invoice files the audit found all 3 planted unbilled items, $5,000.00 in total, and flagged none of 4 traps; capped at Partly because the data was synthetic, not a real account.

Score and verdict differ. Every claim we could test held up, but L1 re-runs are capped at Partly: synthetic data written by the same assistant (not blind), no real account.

What was claimed

'had it do an audit of jobs versus what was invoiced. Within 30 minutes it found $5,000 that had not been invoiced earlier in the year, across 3 jobs.'

What we found

Found the 3 planted jobs and the $5,000.00 total: J-1012 change order 2 $2,150.00, J-1027 milestone 2 $1,377.50, J-1035 15.5 hours at $95 = $1,472.50. None of the 4 traps was flagged as missed; the job still being billed in October was listed as open, not lost. Took 12 seconds of run time.

How we checked it

Answer key written before the data was generated; the data generator plants the 3 items and 4 traps. Not blind: the same assistant wrote the data, the key and the audit.

What the agent did

  1. Answer key written (08:18:13), then synthetic data generated (fixed seed)
  2. Matched every job line (change orders, milestones, hours) to invoice lines
  3. Netted credit notes and split invoices; ignored rounding under $1
  4. Listed the open job separately instead of calling it missed

Where it went wrong

  • Synthetic, tidy CSVs: real exports have free-text descriptions and missing job numbers.
  • Not blind: the same assistant made the data and ran the audit.
  • Connecting to a real accounting system (QuickBooks, Xero) was not tested.

Try it yourself

Exact prompt we used
Audit this year's jobs against what we invoiced. Tell me which jobs have work that was never invoiced, how much, and the total.

Lowest-access way to try it

L1. Export jobs and invoices as CSV (don't give login access) and ask for each unbilled item with the job line and invoice it was matched against. Check the biggest one yourself.

Method
Run on synthetic files, not a real account. We made up a small contractor's year (40 jobs, 91 job lines, 42 invoices and credit notes) with 3 planted unbilled items and 4 traps (split billing, a credit note, a $0.40 rounding gap, a job billed in October), wrote the answer key first, then had the agent audit the files.
